Exposing the Dangers of Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect

The Downey Care Center has been fined a total of $80,000 by the state of California for reports that were made connecting the nursing home facility's inadequate care to the recent death of a patient. Reports have been made by the state Department of Public Health which shed light on the most recent incident of tragedy within one of California's very own nursing home care facilities, Downey Care Center. According to reports, a patient of the center wrongfully lost their life after going into a diabetic coma which is said to have been induced as a direct result of the facility's failure to keep close watch on the patient's glucose level. As if the incident which ended in tragedy wasn't enough, further reports indicate that the care center was fully aware of the patient's history of diabetes, yet still neglected to provide her with the treatment she needed to maintain her health.

The patient has yet to be identified, but information has been released in regards to her overall stay and treatment while under the care of the Downey center. It has been reported that she was first admitted to the facility in 2009 and has since been re-admitted an additional four times. During each stay, the patient's blood sugar was ordered to be monitored and in some cases, insulin dosages were even called for. Upon her last admittance, the patient was being treated for a recurring urinary tract problem; however, there is no reason that her diabetes should have been neglected. It took 29 days of no blood glucose monitoring for the elderly woman's breathing to reflect shallow inhalations, at which time the nursing staff was unable to obtain vital signs. Before her death, doctors reported that the woman was in a deep state of comatose, at which time family members made the difficult decision to remove their beloved's breathing tube to end her pain.
