Families for Better Care is a non-profit organization made of up citizens who advocate better care for those who are confined to nursing homes and other senior care facilities. This group works to create better public awareness of the conditions in these types of facilities throughout the United States. As part of their goal, they have created the Nursing Home Report Card, which analyzes, compares, and ranks the quality of nursing homes in every state. The organization looks at data such as the state's average registered nurse and certified nurse assistant hours per resident per day, the results of health inspections, complaints, and citations found for deficiencies by local authorities. After reviewing all of the data, they then give each state an overall grade.

According to the Nursing Home Report Card, Connecticut ranked 36th out of the 50 states in the quality of its nursing home care and received an overall grade of "D." The state received three "F's" in various factors which were 1) percentage of facilities with severe deficiencies (41.56%), 2) health inspections that were considered to be above average, and 3) verified ombudsman complaints. (Connecticut employs a Long Term Care Ombudsman Program which receives and investigates inquiries and complaints.) In the Report Card key findings, Connecticut was stated to be "among the worst nursing home states in the nation, scoring failing grades in 1 out of 3 measures."

Personal Injury Attorney in Hartford, Connecticut

No one expects to find that a vulnerable elderly family member has been subjected to neglect or abuse at a nursing home or similar care facility. This occurs far too often, however, for many reasons which can range from understaffing to unscrupulous caretakers or associated staff who engage in criminal acts of physical force, emotional abuse, and even sexual misconduct. Where family members suspect that neglect or abuse has occurred, they should take action immediately in alerting facility supervisors, managers, and owners or discussing the situation with an attorney.
