In California, police are currently looking for a woman who is accused of stealing nearly $300,000 from an elderly woman. According to police, the suspect, 73 year old Hazel Whitt Mitchell, is now living in the metro Atlanta area and is accused of committing financial elder abuse.
Aside from the theft of $300,000 from one victim, Mitchell is accused of conning a 93 year old woman out of an additional $300,000 between 1994 and 2007.
Mitchell used to reside in Texas, but is known to have relatives in Atlanta, Lilburn and Loganville. Police suspect that she may be residing with her relatives. She was arrested in 2008 on another financial elder abuse charges in Dallas, Texas, but was released from police custody for unknown reasons.
Police claim that in 1994, Mitchell told her 93 year old victim that her recently deceased brother owed Mitchell money. Mitchell insisted that the elderly woman pay off the false debt, and the senior consented and paid Mitchell $300,000 over the course of 13 years. The victim told police that she paid Mitchell on a weekly basis and, in the process, ended up emptying out her own bank account. Police became involved after the victim reported Mitchell's crimes.
