KSBY.com is reporting that a caregiver in Paso Robles was arrested for
elder abuse. According to police reports, the man was using developmentally disabled seniors to illegally obtain prescription medications. The man, 57 year old Larry Ulam, is reported to have taken extreme advantage of the elders that were left in his care.
"What he was doing was not only caring for them, but also using them to obtain illegal narcotics," said Rob Bryn, a spokesperson for the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department.
Police were made aware of the
elder abuse when two Fed-Ex employees tipped them off. The Fed-Ex employees noticed that medications were being shipped to Ulam at different addresses in Miguel, Paso Robles and Atascadero.
Police report that all packages were signed for my developmentally disabled seniors who were forced to make false claims of medical problems by Ulam. By forcing the seniors to make false medical claims, Ulam was able to illegally obtain prescriptions and then sell the prescriptions for profit. In some cases, it is believed that Ulam may have paid the seniors for their prescriptions.
Ulam is now facing charges for dependent elder abuse, possession of a controlled substance without a legal prescription and attempted witness intimidation.
